The wedding aisles and reception spaces of the internet are dense with couples and wedding parties doing novelty dances. Most of the musical sources and inspirations for these come from the childhood and teenage years of Ned and Megan. While neither of us feels sufficiently talented or organised to coordinate such a performance at our own wedding, this decision has not been reached without consideration and studying of the key video texts.
This couple’s choreographed response to Sir Mixalot is well known.
In an English wedding reception, the high romanticism of the finale of Dirty Dancing is recreated.
And while Ned likes this sampler of grooms and groomsmen walking in the style of Reservoir Dogs, Megan’s favourite is this in-church interpretative response to Total Eclipse of the Heart.
We also hold in particular affection this video of Queen Neve’s wedding to King Toby. Neve is the daughter of a friend of Megan.

Dear Ned and Megan, it’s Sunday morning and Nick’s turn to amuse the children (it was my turn yesterday). As usual he lucked out and they slept ’til nine so he’s pretty pleased with himself and I’ve brought a coffee into my office (how did I ever live without a stovetop espresso machine?) and am having some quiet time catching up on e-mail etc and watching these great clips. I’m not especially fond of weddings in general (though I enjoyed my own!) but some of these look like a hoot.
I loved the stamps and even more now that I know the story behind them. I’m really looking forward to seeing the rings – I might have to look up the designer next time I’m in Christchurch. I e-mailed Jenny Pattrick recently to see if she would make me some paua earrings but she is too busy writing books now (and I suspect that the arthritis has worsened) and doesn’t make jewellery anymore, so I’m on the lookout for a new designer.
I’m afraid that I now have to get to the sad part – as much as I’m not generally keen on weddings, I find I’m desperate to come to yours and I’m afraid I won’t be. I have been feeling really torn but the decision was made for me when I came home after working late (again) and Katie greeted me with a rapturous but surprised: “Mummy, what are you doing here?!”. I said “I live here” and she just said “No!” in a totally disbelieving tone. So I need to sort out my work-life balance and I won’t be making any round the world trips for while.
I hope you have a wonderful day – I know you’ll have a wonderful marriage.
Love and very best wishes to you both,
Jessamine, Nick, Jack, Dash and Katie.
Thank you for your lovely message — we look forward to seeing you when life is less hectic!
